Movie Pitch for Research Essay

The current media is infatuated with the idea of vampires. Many of us, especially but not exclusively young women, were surrounded by a vampire saturated media. Growing up, we watched movies like Twilight and shows like The Vampire Diaries; But what happens when we begin to analyze these creatures in relation to doubles and the uncanny?

Vampires toy with the idea of a bridge between the living and the dead. This relates to Freud’s ideas of what can produce uncanny feelings, or cause uncertainty about the world we live in.

Another interesting thing to research regarding vampires is their past self vs. current self. I believe this could be seen as them having a double or doppelgänger; one past human self and a current living dead self, two people with the same face yet a completely different internal mind.

I think this topic is both interesting and important to write about because the vampire is a fictional creature or aspect of folklore that many of us don’t think about past the surface. It’s important to take a deep dive into what the media is feeding us and form educated opinions about such topics.

To begin, I plan to use “The Uncanny” by Freud as well as “The undead and the living dead: Images of vampires and zombies in contemporary culture” by the Journal of Psychohistory to support my argument, but I plan to add onto this list as my research progresses.
